For over a decade now, the Grewal brothers have provided Australia with the quality ingredients they deserve. With over 3000 acres of most productive land in Millewa — aka ‘Golden Grain Country’, they are the producer of premium Victorian grains — you can be certain that you are receiving the finest products available.
The Grewal brothers — Agyakar Singh Grewal, Manjinder Singh Grewal and Kamaljit Singh Grewal — were born in Punjab, India, to a family of farmers. In 1988, they decided to leave India, bringing with them all the agriculture knowledge accumulated over generations, and settled in New Zealand.
For twelve years, the brothers ran a restaurant and greengrocer but felt their talents were wasted. Farming ran through their blood; it was time to put it to good use. The Grewals packed up and relocated to Renmark, South Australia, and purchased a 36-acre vineyard and 25 acres of stone fruit. Upon success, the brothers decided to expand, investing in a 3000-acre property in Cullulleraine with 65 acres of almonds and dry land which the brothers planned to use to cultivate even more nuts.
It is said that when one door closes, another opens. This was the case for the Grewal brothers. In 2007, a horrible drought struck the area, lasting for three years. Water was expensive and hard to get — if the brothers were to survive in this business, they needed something else up their sleeve.
In 2009, the Grewals purchased a second-hand traditional stone flour mill from their homeland and had it shipped to Millewa. The brothers saw a huge success with introducing their products in stores in the big capital cities and small country towns — so much so that they soon expanded to supply New Zealand as well.
Golden Grain Mills now mills thousands of tonnes of wheat per year, a significant amount coming from the brothers’ own crops.
